Novel diesters of diethyl hydroxymethylphosphonate of the formula: IMAGE IMAGE in which R1 and R4 are alkylene radicals -(CH2)m- in which m is 0 or an integer, R2 and R3 are H or alkyl radicals, the total number of carbon atoms in R1, R2, R3 and R4 being not more than 10, are described.
