Refuse contg. waste paper and paper derivs. is processed to form a fertilisers and a purified paper pulp by (a) pulping with a mixt. of H2O, a Ca and/or Mg cpd. NH4 cpd. a solvent for contaminants and a wetting agent at an alkaline pH to form a suspension; (b) treating the suspension with phosphate ions to ppte NH4 phosphate and Ca and/or Mg phosphate together with the contaminants; and (c) separating the ppte for use as a fertiliser. The process permits the recovery of a high-grade long fibre pulp free of ink, coating agents and waxes, and the simultaneous prodn. of an NP (or NPK) fertiliser with good controlled-release properties.
