A device for (modifying) coherent radiation comprises a single crystal body of nominal compsn LiNbO3, treated to minimise sensitivity to radiation damage. During melt growth in a heated furnace zone, all solids, including structural members in the heated zone, have a max. iron content of 10 p.p.m. based on cationic or atomic content, and starting ingredients and container materials contacting the melt have a max. iron content of 1 p.p.m. The crystal is pref. annealed at 500-700 degrees C in oxygen contg. atmos. esp. in an electric field. The device is pref. a parametric device or second harmonic generator, with output radiation 0.65 mu. May operate below about 100 degrees C.
