The prodn. of propylene oxide (I) by the non-catalytic reaction of C3H6 and O2 in the liq. phase is carried out in an automatically recycling tubular reactor in the presence of a solvent. The tubular part of the reactor pref. is upright. The amt. of O2 added should be such that this is consumed between the O2 inlet and the outlet for the prod., the part of the reactor concerned pref. being in the form of bubble column. The prods. are pref. removed at the top of the reactor or cycle and the circulating material passes through a cooler. The process gives a high yield of (I) and few by-prods. and can be controlled easily. In contrast with stirred reactors, this tubular reactor can be scaled-up easily.
