Continuous separation of =1 component from a mixt. so specified that the components, having primary velocities in one direction, have a second velocity component super-imposed on this, so that the two components are collected at two different positions. The device consists of a separation zone to accept the material, a feed section and suitable receptacles for the separated components. The relative posn. of the separation zone to the receptacles and the feed zone is changed so as to produce the required velocity component, this been variable with time. The primary velocity variation is produced by passing the mixture through a material with different affinities for the different components. The principle is capable of application to any mixt. of components where several are dissolved or suspended in a carrier fluid. It provides a continuous separation where often at present only batchwise operation is feasible.
