Regeneration of conjugated diolefin dimerisation catalysts (I) contg. Pd and triaryl phosphine, esp. PPh3, takes place by bonding Pd with triaryl phosphine to form a difficultly soluble complex, (II), pref. a tetrakis (triaryl phosphine)-Pd; separating the pptd. (II) and converting (II) by partial oxidn. into an active, easily soluble form. (I) is pref. used for dimerisation of butadiene to form octatriene-1,3,7-and in presence of alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids or amines, for prepn. of 1-alkoxy-octadiene-2,7, 1-phenoxyoctadiene-2,7, 1-acyl-octadiene-2,7, or opt. N-alkyl-substd 1-amino-octadiene-2,7. A simple process is provided for re-converting a spent catalyst into a highly active condition.
