Speed or travel measurement of rail vehicles - using accompanying doppler radar directed to track

The aerial of the accompanying Doppler radar system is directed diagonally towards the rail track and aligned to the fixing means which fix the rails to the sleepers or the gravel of the track. The fixing means consist of, for example, rail bolts, heads of screw bolts for clamping plates which hold the rail, fishplates or similar parts which feature surfaces vertical to the direction of travel. Although the fixing means are not spaced uniformly but only at specific intervals, the aerial of the Doppler radar provides better output signals than in the case of a continuous layer of gravel.
