Burner for waste gases from chemical processes comprises regenerating agent (19) which is maintained at high temp. and over which the gases are passed in heat-exchange relationship to draw off heat from the agent, causing surface combustion and increasing temp. of the gases to ignition point. There may be several regenerating units, with a rotary switching valve (3) at one end for entry of gases, and at the other end a reaction zone including a temp.-adjusting chamber (21) with an auxiliary burner (23) and a distribution pipe.
