Hair curler rotates under spring recoil to effect the winding of a tress of hair onto the roller (14): a shaft (11) bearing the roller housing in a handle piece (12) and the roller and handle being connected by a spiral spring (21). In operation the assembly locks onto teh hair tress, the handle i s rotated against a light hair tension and the spring which is tensioned or compressed. Movement of the appliance towards the hair root then causes the roller to rotate under spring recoil to take up slack hair. The handle can be attached to curling irons (14) or tubular combs fitted for heating and blowing. Pref. the roller or iron incorporates an adaptor haunch (10) which screws into the handle (12).
