Methionine is prepd. by reacting a dialkyl carbonate with 3-methylthiopropyl isonitrile in presence of NaH, neutralising with acid to give an alkyl, 2-isocyano-4-methylthiobutyrate; in the second stage this ester is treated with a strong acid which is then neutralised.
