The tube (11) has an orthodox overall shape having a transparent window (12) at its largest diameter end followed by a transparent photocathode (13). A multichannel grid (14), each channel in the grid being slightly curved, is sandwiched between two conducting layers (19, 20). A target surface (10) is plated on the conducting surface furthest away from the tube face. A grid (15) is situated between this target area and an electron gun (16) with deflection electrodes (17). The grid channels have a 12.5 micron diameter and a length of about 2.5 mm. The potentials of the photocathode and target plate are -1900 volts and -1600 volts respectively. Each channel of the grid (14) produces secondary emission with a coefficient greater than 1 and functions in a charge saturation mode.
