The manually-operated vacuum pump has a cylindrical body accommodating a piston actuated by an external handle, and is particularly for a vacuum immobilisation mattress used in first aid to the injured. The body has a base with at least two positioning supports holding it in a vertical position in relation to the ground, also an axial suction orifice (6) joining onto a horizontal radial absorption orifice (7). The latter has a union accommodating a connection to the vessel to be evacuated, the radial orifice and the union are both incorporated in the base. A spigot socket can be formed in the base round the union.
