LINEAR HOMOPOLYESTERS AND COPOLYESTERS BASED ON TEREPHTHALIC ACID AND /OR ISOPTHALIC ACID

1429366 Polyesters CIBA-GEIGY AG 16 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 38834/73 Heading C3R Polyesters having a relative viscosity of 0À5- 3À0 dl/g. are prepared by reacting terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof with a diol of the formula in which R is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl and RSP1/SP is hydrogen or together with R is a tetramethylene radical. Alkylene glycols having 2-10 carbon atoms may also be included in the reaction. The diols used in the examples are 1,1SP1/SP- methylene - bis - [3 - (# - hydroxyethyl) - 5,5- dimethylhydantoin], 1,1SP1 /SP- methylene - bis - [3- (# - hydroxy - n - propyl) - 5,5 - dimethylhydantoin], 1,1SP1/SP- methylene - bis - [3 - (# - hydroxycyclohexyl) - 5,5 - dimethylhydantoin], 1,11- methylene - bis - [3 - (# - hydroxy - n - butyl)- 5,5 - dimethylhydantoin], ethylene glycol, 1,4- butanediol and 1,6-hexanediol. In Example 12 a flame-retardant composition is prepared from the polyester, decabromodiphenyl, antimony trioxide and 3 mm. long glass fibres.
