1458672 Jointing PSM FASTENERS Ltd 17 July 1974 [19 July 1973] 34443/73 Heading B3V [Also in Division F2] Inserts 60 are installed in thermoplastics material 69 by apparatus comprising a shoe 24 with a passage 37, 38 for the inserts, a heater 27 for the shoe so that the inserts are heated within the shoe primarily by heat transmission through the shoe, and means for displacing the inserts out of the shoe and into the plastics. A slide 15 to which the shoe is clamped by screws 31 with an interposed layer 30 and sleeves 32 of insulation, is operated by a fluid-pressure cylinder 44 the piston of which lowers the slide through a spring 49 engaging a lug 51 on the slide. A collar 52 on a chuck 46 effects return movements, the chuck carrying a mandrel 53 with a socket-end for driving stud-inserts or, as shown, having a spigot-end 53a for driving the socket inserts shown. The slide 15 has lugs (17), Fig. 1 (not shown), slidable on posts (14), one of the lugs receiving a hollow stop-screw (54) for limiting downward movement to a point where an insulating sleeve 43 surrounding a collet 39 on the shoe is adjacent the work 69. Further downward movement of the piston 50 compressing the spring 49 and pushing an insert out of the collet and into the blind bore 70. Inserts may be supplied from a vibratory bowl to a branch passage 38 in the shoe from which they are released simply when the chuck 46 raises a catch (65). The thermostatically-controlled heater 27 has a tapered end secured in the shoe 24; shoe-temperatures may be 600-800‹ C.
