A plastic foam article is moulded in an open mould and during foaming an air flow is forced across the surface of the foam in a direction transversely of the side walls of the mould. The air flow counteracts or compliments the other forces acting on the foam, e.g. expansion force, friction, gravity and can be adjusted or deviated as required to produce the desired shape of surface (e.g. flat, curved).
