The disclosure relates to a novel synthesis of prostaglandins and prostaglandin-like compounds which comprises reacting a lactol, for example 4.beta.-¢4-¢3-chlorophenoxy)-3.alpha.-hydroxybut-1-trans-enyl!-2,3,3a.beta.,6a.beta.-tetrahydro-2-hydroxy-5.alpha.-(trimethylsilyloxy)cyclopenteno¢b!furan, with a phosphonium salt in the presence of a strong base.
