pIn operation two zones are established axially of a shaft furnace fed at its top with ore and at its side walls transversely with reducing gases. A central zone has a charge which is less easy to reduce than the charge of a surrounding ring zone. This ensures a constant degree of redn. across the shaft furnace cross section. The central zone may be fed with a charge having a larger grain size than the ring zone charge. The centre zone charge may be of haematite ore and the ring zone charge may be of magnetite ore.
