1505586 Filters in steam condenser MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG AG 5 May 1975 [8 May 1974] 18687/75 Heading BID [Also in Division F4] Filter units are provided in or adjacent cooling tubes 2 of a steam condenser 1 (Fig. 4), connected for example to a steam turbine 16, to filter the secondary water which circulates round a closed circuit through tubes 2 and a dry cooling tower 17, 18. Condenser 1 may include one or more banks of tubes 2 connected in parallel and series, with filter units fitted to some or all tubes in each bank. Filter units may decrease in porosity in the direction of flow. Each filter unit may comprise a rigid self-supporting filter or a flexible filter 9 supported within a cage 8 (Fig. 2). By closing the inlet and outlet sides of the condenser and opening drainage and venting lines (15, 14, Fig. 1 not shown), the condenser may be drained under gravity, thus reversing the flow through the filter units. Such reversal may invert each filter 9 to a position inside a secondary support cage 13 and clean the filter for re-use. Alternatively flow reversal may overcome the pressure applied by ribs 32 of cages 8 to the tube interiors to displace the filter units permanently from their positions in tubes 2. This enables filter units to clean the rust particles from the circuit shortly after installation, after which the units are not necessary so they are removed and no longer impede coolant flow.
