1332204 Treating endless webs PLATT INTERNATIONAL Ltd 6 March 1972 [20 March 1971] 7535/71 Heading D1L Apparatus for treating endless length of cloth F in rope form comprises a vessel 1 of substantially straight tubular form mounted with its longitudinal axis inclined at an angle of 5‹-30‹ to the horizontal, an open-ended conduit 18 provided in the lower part of the vessel 1 at a similar inclination, means comprising a treatment liquid jet (Fig. 4, not shown) at the inlet 19 to the conduit 18 and freely rotatable guide roller 21 for feeding the endless cloth F through the downwardly inclined conduit and back through the vessel in multilooped arrangement to re-enter the conduit and means comprising circulation pump 6, jet throttle 8 and inlet 9 for introducing the treatment liquid under pressure to the inlet 19. As illustrated the vessel 1 preferably has a closable port 2 for loading and unloading the cloth to be treated with the aid of winch 3; inlet 4 and valve 5 for the introduction of compressed air for use when treatment under pressure is required; liquid outlet pipe 10 communicating with pump 6 via filter 12 for liquid circulation; and heat exchanger 7 provided on the outlet side of pump 6. The conduit 18 preferably progressively increases in width and decreases in depth along its length so that its cross-section is square at point A/A and oblong at point B/B (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown), this arrangement facilitating cloth feed back and opening to prevent crushing and creasing. The downstream end of conduit 18 is provided with an upturned portion 20 which has its outlet facing up the vessel. Roller 21 is positioned to allow the level of treatment liquid in the vessel to be set between L 2 when the cloth is totally submerged during treatment and L, when the cloth is allowed to emerge into atmosphere before passing again down conduit 18. Jet pipes 27 may also be provided to direct treatment liquid towards and through perforated baffles 29, 30 to provide a braking action on the cloth F as it exits from its multi-looped arrangement.
