The working appliance consists of piston rod and cylinder, the rod being secured against turning relative to the cylinder. The piston rod (2) and its passage aperture (3) in the cylinder head (4) have a non-circular cross section. Both have a profiled circumference, which is completely or partly curved, and which partly extends in a straight line. The profile may be symmetrical or unsymmetrical, e.g. oval, or can be a polygon with rounded-off corners. The unit can be a telescopic piston unit anchored to the ground at one end.
