As an alternative to producing a wide variety of postage stamps with different values printed on them, a single stamp is printed without any value. An automatic machine is then used to add any required value in the form of perforated numbers. The pre-printed stamps are contained on a roll and are fed over drive rollers to the value punching station. A base plate contains a matrix of holes. A carrier mounted on a shaft has a number of punch arrangements set up to provide different numerical values. The clamping plates hold the stamp strip in position while the punch operates, being guided through a plate. A rotating disc with synchronised motion discharges the stamp into a collector.
