The device (1) has a control unit connected with an electronic camera and with a storage device to compare the dimensions detected by the electronic camera with stored patterns, to accomplish format detection. An input device (4) is provided optionally to the user such that the user can select different kinds of services. A postal stamp printer prints the corresponding postage stamps based on a detected format, well disposed weight of the post pieces on a base plate and the service type selected by the user, when the cost for the postage stamps is paid.
