Treatment of wood with preservative in low boiling solvent - followed by treatment with high boiling oil, to provide protection against microorganisms, moisture and air

In a process for treatment of wood by (a) impregnating with a soln. contg. preservative in an evaporable solvent, (b) treating the wood in a warm high boiling oil compsn. under vacuum so that solvent evaporates and (c) removing the oil compsn., the improvement is that (i) the evaporable solvent is an organic solvent having a b.pt. 200 degrees C, (ii) the high boiling oil compsn. has a b.pt. =250 degrees C and (iii) the high boiling oil compsn. is maintained at 60-110 degrees C during the evaporating period. The wood prod. has protection against microorganisms due to the preservative and also has surface protection against air and moisture due to the oil introduced in the outer layers of wood. Pref. the org. solvent has b.pt. 75-125 degrees C and the oil has b.pt. 300 degrees C. During evaporation the oil is maintained at ca 80 degrees C at 100 mm Hg. The preservative is pref. chlorophenol, 6-12C fatty acid, Cu cpd. or Sn cpd.
