A window raising and lowering system for a vehicle door includes a rack and pinion drive, combined with a double acting piston, operated by a pressure medium. The double piston (6, 7, 8) is housed inside a horizontal cylinder (3) positioned inside the door, under the window. The bar (8) connecting the two ends (6, 7) of the piston is a toothed rack and a pinion (10) protrudes through a slot (11) in the middle of the cylinder, to engage the rack. An arm (13) is attached to the pinion, and is connected by a spindle (14) to the bottom of the window. When the piston travels, the rack rotates the pinion, swings the arm and lifts or lowers the window. A tube (17, 18) connected to each end of the cylinder is connected by valves to atmosphere and a suction tube of the engine.
