Automatic transmission with engine braking - having change up inhibit switch when throttle at idling for coasting downhill

The accelerator pedal (5) operates a switch (S) when near the idling position and which is connected into the automatic gear change control. It inhibits the change-up sequence which would select a higher gear when running downhill. At the same time the control progressively operates the engine brake by closing off the exhaust manifold. The control enables the automatic transmission vehicle to have engine braking when coasting downhill. This saves brake wear and increases the safety of the vehicle.
