Inorganic oxide-supported Ni-Ag catalysts (I) contain w.r.t. total metals, 70-95% Ni and 30-5% Ag. (I) are prepd. by common or fractionated pptn. of hydroxides or oxides of Ni and Ag onto carrier, by treating aq. salt solns. of these metals with alkaline reagents, drying and reducing in flowing H2 at 290 (pref. 350-450) degrees C. Catalyst is pref. used for hydrogenating oils contg. in addn. to linoleic acid, higher unsatd. fatty acids, esp. tri- to poly-unsatd. fatty acids. Partic. uses are hydrogenation of soya- and rape oil, mustard- and wheat germ oil, and can be used for frying. Also used for salad oils and mayonnaise. Catalyst activity is increased. Linolenic acid proportion can be lowered to 0-10% of original value and linoleic acid proportion to 40-60% of original value.
