Singly-unsatd. fatty acids or derivs. are prepd. by hydrogenating multi-unsatd. fatty acids or derivs. at 0-150 deg.C and 800-1500 hPa, with H2, in presence of a catalyst system contg. (a) a Pd salt, (b) a nitrogenous, aprotic solvent as activator, and opt. (c) a base to neutralise the acid formed on redn. of the Pd salt, (d) water and/or (e) an inert, water-immiscible solvent. USE/ADVANTAGE - Fatty acids mixts. or derivs. rich in linoleic and linolenic acids are hydrogenated (claimed). Fatty acids or derivs. from soya oil, sunflower oil, palm oil, cottonseed oil, fish oil, tall oil, peanut oil, linseed oil, corn seed oil, olive oil, rape oil, tallow and lard can also be treated. Free fatty acids and their esters and amides can be hydogenated as can unsatd. alcohols derived from acids by selective hydrogenation of the COOH gp. Technical fatty acids with more than 60% or 70% of oleic acid are raw materials for cosmetics, for petroleum prodn. for the textile industry and for many other applns. Hydrogenation is selective (avoiding prodn. of fully satd. cpds) and under mild conditions, with small amts. of catalysts and short reaction times. The catalyst is resistant to poisons and is easily sepd. for re-use.
