A network provides a high quality check on serially transmitted binary data using a row and column parity generation and checking arrangement at both transmitting and receiving terminals. The data, which typically consists of a number of characters made up of binary bits, is taken from a store (SSP) in the transmitter, and delivered to a buffer store (PSU) and a parity generating array (SQP1-SQP4) in serio parallel format. The result is serialised in the buffer store (PSU) and transmitted over a serial transmitter (S) and line (Uek) to a receiver (E), which feeds a corresp. buffer store (SPU) and parity array (EQB1-EQB4) before feeding the data in serio-parallel form to a receiver store (ESP). The row and column parities are checked by this network and its associated logic, under the control of suitable timing pulses.
