The parent patent describes the mechanical handling of coal between the storage tower and the preheating plant for its preparation for charging into the coke ovens. In this addn. a transporting installation for coking coal between the preheaters and the storage tower, has batteries of hot coal storage and metering bunkers arranged on each side of the tower for loading the oven charging wagons. The storage tower has in addition to the chutes for filling wet coal into the charging wagons, metering valves feeding the conveyors transporting the wet coal to the preheaters. From the preheaters the self-compensating conveyors return the hot coal to a junction on the tower where ancillary belts distribute it to the laterally positioned hot coal bunkers. The ancillary belts may be erected inside or outside the tower. Excess gas from the preheaters is fed into the enclosed hot coal conveyor system and fills all the otherwise unoccupied space. It flows through the hot coal bunkers and the metering hoppers and finally through cyclones for the collection of fines before being vented to atmosphere. The transporting of the preheated coal is effected by way of conventional coal towers and charging wagons which function as normally, but at the same time take over the transport of preheated coal.
