The diesel engine is of the type provided with an exhaust driven turbo-chargeer (3, 5), a by-pass (11) connecting the exhaust line (2) upstream of the turbine (3) with the inlet line (10) downstream of the charger compressor (5), and a control valve (12, 13) in the by-pass. An exhaust brake valve (7, 8) is provided downstream of the turbine (3) whose closure member (8) is coupled (14) with that (13) of the control valve so as to provide simultaneous closure. The position of the by-pass valve is preferably adjustable independently as a function of engine speed and load.
