Chymopapain from Carica papaya juice - with antiinflammatory activity for local and systemic use, e.g. in treating haematomas

Therapeutic compsns. contg. as active component chymopapain, are useful as antiinflammatory agent for systemic or topical administration. Also used in normal proteolytic procedures. The chymopapain is obtd. by treating juice from Carica papaya with a weak cation-exchange resin adjusted to the isoelectric point of papain, 8. 4, washing out papain and then elution of the chymopapain with a soln. of NaC1 contg. about 0.5% of Na2S2O3. Eluate is dialysed, opt. after ultrafiltration spray- or freeze-drying and redissolving in a small volume of solvent, finally freeze-drying the dialysate after concn.
