The fork (9), with its prongs (8) is lowered by the cable (10) towards a platform (25). As it comes down, side plates (26) moved by hydraulic rams (29) align it with the spaces in the pallet beneath the load (34). When on the platform, the cable is allowed to go slack, preventing any detrimental wind effects. A hydraulic ram system (18, 19) causes a plate (30) to push the fork prongs under the load. The cable is tautened and the load lifted away. The side plates, rams etc., are returned to their starting position and the platform (33) carrying the loads is rotated 180 deg., presenting another load (35).
