This article presents the results of a simulation concerning free surface flow and transport of suspended matter along a 16.7 km section of the Rhine. For this purpose the dumping of harbour sediments was measured and the distribution of these sediments was calculated by means of two 2-dimensional numerical models with the goal to estimate possible ecological loads. The results of these simulations showed, that both models simulated the current very well. Quantitative statements concerning the sedimentation and re-suspension of the dumped material are very difficult, because these models show a very sensitive reaction to some empirical parameters.
