Flat or cylindrical elements in exchanger or separator apparatus have a central core with, on =1 face, =1 raised part in the form of a continuous rib or individual projections. The raised parts are separated from each other and arranged so that the raised parts of one lement fit into the spaces between the raised parts of the adjacent element. Some or all of the raised parts can come into contact with the core of the adjacent element, and the membrane is arranged so that it is interposed between the raised parts of adjacent elements such that where the tips of the raised parts meet the core of the adjacent element the membrane is trapped between them. Raised parts on an element can all be of the continuous ribbed type or all of the individual projection type or a mixture of the two. Some elements may only have raised parts on one side so that two flat surfaces may come together, and adjacent elements need not have the same type of raised parts on the mating faces. The peaks or ribs comprising the raised parts of the element are rounded at the tips. The elements are used in exchangers/or separators with semi-permeable membranes where press. does not exceed 10 bars, e.g. ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, diffusion, humidification of air and gases, dialysis and direct osmosis, in particular in the medical field for haemodialysis and the oxygenation of blood.
