The emergency brake is formed from a blanket (14) of frictional reinforced material which is normally suspended clear of the road in front of the rear wheels (10). Suspension is by a strong bar (11) which pivots about a strong connection (12) on the chassis (13). If the main brakes fail, an independent cable or linkage mechanism lowers the bar and so the blanket, which then slides underneath the rear wheels. Friction between the blanket and road surfaces brings the vehicle to a halt. Throughout the emergency braking, the rear types remain undamaged and the vehicle can be steered by its front wheels.
