Vat dyes are of formula (I). In (I) X is a mono- or di-alkylamino, aralkylamino or cycloamino gp.; and Y is H or has formula (II). (I) are used to dye or print fibrous matls., esp. to print natural or regenerated cellulose fibres, or as pigments in printing rayon, viscose, cellulose ethers and esters, polyamides, polyurethanes and polyesters. (I) are also used in lacquers, acetyl- or nitro-cellulose solns., and natural and synthetic resins. (I) can be used in crayons, cosmetics and laminated sheets. The dyeings are fast to light, water, Cl2 and boiling in alkali. (I) show good reserve on polyester fibres and can be used with disperse dyes to dye mixed fibres; X is beta-hydroxyethylamino, and Y is H. (I) may be prepd. by reacting (I) (X = halogen) with an amine.
