Clarifying hot beer wort in breweries, by decanting - with sediment held back within rubber skirted annular shield

Appts. comprises a vertical, cylindrical, vessel with a tangential inlet at the top of liq. suspension to be decanted and a peripheral outlet at the bottom for clarified liq. Fitted for raising and lowering inside the vessel is a coaxial annular shield with an outside radius slightly less than distance between the axis of the vessel and its peripheral outlet. The shield pref. comprises an annular frame suspended from cables attached to lifting gear outside the vessel. The underside of the frame is pref. fitted with a rubber skirt to rest on the base of the vessel when the shiled is in its lowered position. The frame is pref. made of perforated sheet metal and the overall, axial depth of the shield is approx. equal to the height of piled sediment within the shield just before cleaning out. Method is simple and provides a clear wort.
