1518739 Rotatable tubular film extruder J M FONTAINE 6 Dec 1976 [9 Dec 1975] 50742/76 Heading B5A An extruder 1, for tubular plastics film, is mounted for continuous rotation about the axis of the tubular film, and platform 2 which revolves upon a fixed pedestal 10, into which projects a part 11 which is fixed to the platform 2 and affords communication from the pedestal 10 to the extruder 1, of plastics granules or powder to be extruded, circulating water and air, and electricity. The extruder 1 may be vertically orientated, as shown, with its axis coincident with that of the extruding film or, alternatively, one or more extruders may be horizontally orientated. The platform 2 is carried on the pedestal at a ball thrust bearing 9 and carries; a motor 6 which effects the rotation of the platform 2, via a polyurethane roller 7 engaging a crown wheel 7; a motor 4 which rotates the extruder screw via pulleys and a toothed be a control console 3 for the extrusion apparatus; and a feeding means for the plastics comprising a hopper 32 which is intermittently fed with the plastics from a supplementary hopper 29, into which the plastics is delivered by a vacuum device 30 carried by the hopper 29. The electricity is supplied (not shown) via conductors passing through the pedestal 10 and brushes which bear against collector rings carried by the part 11. Supply and return of air and water is effected via pipes 12-15 passing through the pedestal 10, circular grooves 20- 23 defined between the pedestal and part 11 and packing gaskets, and pipes 16-19 which pass through the part 11 and connect to the console 3. The plastics is supplied by a fixed pipe 25 passing through a bore 24 of the pedestal 10 and connecting, at a rotary joint 26, to a pipe 27 passing through the part 11 and connecting at a pipe 28 to the hopper 29. A valve 31 which is provided at the outlet of the hopper 29, is closed by the suction in the hopper 19 and, when suction is terminated by a programmer (not shown), opens under the weight of material to permit its passage to the hopper 32. A level indicator 33 in the hopper 32, acts to interrupt the programmed cycles of the suction device at a predetermined level of material. A gauze filler (not shown) is provided between the suction device 30 and the hopper 29, and is cleared by provision for reversing the suction device, or by an air inlet above the gauze to which air may be admitted by the programmer.
