The capstan winch has a base for fixing to the boat deck, a rotary drum being driven in one direction only. The drum (6) has, at its base, a skirt (61) covering the base (5), and in the skirt are one or more apertures (62), through which access can be gained to fixing bolts etc. holding the base in position. Base, drum and drive mechanism can be held together by a single screw (8) inserted through the base from underneath and engaging in the drum. In the latter there are no apertures in the top or side leading to the inside. Removable sealing devices can be fitted in the apertures formed in the skirt.
