1457704 Parachutes BRUGGEMANN & BRAND KG 3 Dec 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 52298/74 Heading B7G To restrain the initial opening of a parachute canopy 1 a continuous strip 4 of material is secured to the rigging lines 3 below the hem 2 of the canopy and between each pair of rigging lines the strip is first folded in its own length to make a loop 4b which is then folded sideways as shown in Fig. 5 to be sandwiched between respective folded portions of the base of the canopy prior to packing of the parachute. Upon release of the parachute from its pack the frictional resistance offered by the folded portions 4b prevents initial shock opening of the canopy and prevents the rigging lines from becoming entangled with the canopy. In a canopy of synthetic material the strip would be made from cotton to ensure adequate frictional resistance and its circumferential length is less than that of the hem of the canopy to create a diverging- converging shape to the inflated canopy.
