1471288 Flexible shafts SOC INTERNATIONALE DE MECANIQUE INDUSTRIELLE SA 5 July 1974 [5 July 1973] 29976/74 Heading F2U The casing 3 of a flexible shaft 1 is releasably connected to an instrument S to be driven by shaft 1 by means of a sleeve 2 fixed in the casing 3 and having resilent fingers 12 at one end with teeth facing radially inwards at their free ends, axial movement of the sleeve 2 towards the instrument in assembly causing the teeth to slide up a camming surface 14 of the instrument and engage behind a flange in a groove 13 as shown, with a further sleeve 16 then being moved over the fingers 12 to prevent disengagement. During assembly the sleeve 16 is in a position away from the fingers 12, and projections at one end of it on axial engage in a groove 22 of sleeve 2, these projections moving over an abutment 23 when the sleeve 16 is moved to hold fingers 12 on the instrument S as shown. The sleeve 2 is of plastics material as is the sleeve 16. There is a bearing 6 between shaft 1 and sleeve 2. A driven shaft 11, which may carry a magnet in a speedometer or tachometer, has a square-section cavity 11a for reception of the square-section end la of shaft 1.
