1483080 Treating radioactive and toxic waste GES FUR KERNFORSCHUNG mbH and BAYER AG 13 Dec 1974 [20 Dec 1973] 53954/74 Heading G6R A waste organic liquid containing a radioactive or toxic substance is brought into contact with a mixture of a monovinyl compound, a polyvinyl compound, and a polymerization catalyst and the mixture is polymerized at from 15-150‹ C. into a solid which is suitable for storage. Lists are given of monovinyl compounds, polyvinyl compounds and catalysts which may be used. The organic liquids treated may comprise esters, sulphides, sulphoxides, amine oxides, phosphine oxides, arsine oxides, amines, ammonium and sulphonium salts, ketones, ethers, carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, mercaptans, oximes, lactams, hydroxyamines, phosphonates, phosphinates, quinolines and pyrazoles. Long lists of such compounds are given. Aqueous acid may be present with the organic liquid treated; neutralization of the acid may be effected by adding CaO, MgO, or a cation exchanger. Waste oils, lubricants, or soaps may be treated, with the addition of toluene or xylene as a swelling agent for the vinyl polymer. In examples, the radioactive liquids treated are tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), a mixture of TBP (with or without dodecane) and phosphoric acid, pump oil (with or without toluene), and bis-2-ethyl hexyl phosphoric acid ester. Examples 15 and 16 describe the treatment of toxic liquids containing Malathion (R.T.M.) and parathion. The monovinyl compound used in the examples is styrene, the polyvinyl compound is divinyl benzene, and the catalyst is azo-di-isobutyrodinitrile or benzoyl peroxide.
