Xanthates are used as collectors for enriching gypsum, esp. from by-prods. contg. it, by flotation. Accompanying impurities can be removed as froth. Process is useful, e.g., for treating prods. from H3PO4 prodn. or citric acid prodn. using microorganisms. In an example, an aq. suspension of CaSO4-contg. material was mixed with amyl xanthate and a 1:1 mixt. of terpene alcohol and polyglycol ether alcohol. The suspension was adjusted to pH 1.5 with H2SO4 and allowed to react with the flotation reagents for 10 mins. The suspension was then aerated. After 45 mins. impurities were removed. Yield of CaSO4 was 95.5%.
