The brake typically forms part of an electric motor. The stationary brake coil (23) and pad (24) are mounted in a housing (21). The armature disc (20) is attached to a support plate (19) by an annular spring (25) such that the disc bears against the plate in the deenergised state. The plate (19) is attached to a carrier (11) solidly coupled to the motor shaft (10). The drive between carrier (11) and plate (19) is through cylindrical pins (38) fitted in holes in the carrier which also contains friction elements (14). The force exerted by these elements is greater than that of the annular spring (25), but less than that generated by the brake magnet. Thus, with the coil energised, if the disc (20) reaches the limit of travel allowed by the spring (25) before making contact with the brake pad (24) the disc and plate assembly moves relative to the carrier (11) until the brake is engaged. Automatic compensation for brake wear is thus provided.
