The moving cover (12) pressing the metal sheet (F) into place has tappets working in conjunction with small plates on the machine table (1), so that when the sheet is pressed into place on the container lugs are formed on it at the four corners, by means of which it can ultimately be torn off. The tappets can be so shaped that they thrust the corners of the sheet downwards and seal it to the container rim, but keep the lugs clear of the container walls. Alternatively the plates, solidly secured to the spring-mounted table, can fit between the sheet and the container wall to keep the lugs clear of it.
