The instrument and cable set testing device automatically carries out routine testing until a fault is detected. Then it stops. The device is intended esp. for testing preassembled motor vehicle assemblies with multiple plug-in connectors. A test unit is provided for each cable to be tested or for an assembly. Such a unit consists of a switch, a fault switch, a further switch, and signalling and fault lamps. If a test result is positive, the device sets itself automatically to the next object of test. Testing is stopped if a fault is detected. The fault can be located by the state of the signalling lamps.
