Shaped catalyst sections are arranged longitudinally inside an outer tube. Gas flows in the annulus between this tube and the catalyst, then radially through the catalyst into a central passage in the latter, which forms the outlet. The sections are linked together as units. Pref. furnace tube is closed at the bottom end and has a raw gas inlet connection at the top. Shaped catalyst sections lie centrally within this tube and the space between the sections and the tube wall is kept uniform by protuberances on the catalyst sections which located the latter. Used in catalytic process gas cracking reactors heated either by furnace gases or hot gas from a nuclear reactor. The assembly of catalyst sections may be readily removed from the reactor tube for replacement. Press. drop in service is constant and at a low level.
