The tethering chain (1) is split into two part chains extending from a middle ring (4) and is releasably fixed to the ends of a strap (7) with a wide support face which encloses the neck of the animal. The width of the support face can be varied to suit the neck width of the animal. The strap (7) consists of two parts (8, 9) which are hinged together and the strap can have a hinged intermediate piece which can be replaced. The hinge(s) is/are formed by the meshing ends of the strap paths (8, 9, 10) and by a removable pin which passes through the connected ends.
