The device comprises a transparent linear scale (2) with a surface (2A) on which scale divisions are produced. There is a case (1) holding the scale (2); a guiding slot (1B) in the case (1) outer surface, running in the scale (2) longitudinal direction; and a detector (3) near the case (1) and movable relative to it. The detector (3) has a projection (31) passing through the slot (1B) into the case (1); a support (8) at the end of the projection (31), on which a measurement scale (84) with detectors (81) for reading the linear scale (2) and the measurement scale is provided. The measurement scale is near the linear scale (2), and the detector support (8) is in contact with a bearing surface (82B) on the scale (2) back side. A linear spring (9) on the detector projection (31) is provided which presses the measurement scale to the linear scale (2).
