Prodn. of D,L-cysteine and its salts by reaction of 2-substd. -thiazolines with hydrogen cyanide to form the corresp thiazolidine-4-carbonitriles and reaction of these with mineral acids in the presence of water. Process produces D,L-cysteine in excellent yields, with purity sufficiently high to be used directly in the food industry and by a process suitable for industrial scale prodn. known processes give only average yields and use costly starting materials.
